Larry Collins is available to advise collectors in the purchase of works of art as they build large collections or obtain single pieces. He has consulted closely with collectors and museums obtaining important works by Diane Arbus, Walker Evans, Robert Mapplethorpe, Mike Disfarmer, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and many others. Collins has arranged acquisitions for the permanent collections of the International Center of Photography, the photograph collections at the New York Public Library, the Worcester Art Museum, and other institutions.
Gallery goers in
Provincetown have come to expect the highest quality exhibitions of
early photography from Larry Collins who was previously Director of
the Driskel Gallery and Curator of Vintage Photography at the
Schoolhouse Center in Provincetown, MA.
He has curated
many solo and group exhibitions which have included work by
Allen Ginsberg, George H. Seeley, Wilhelm von Glöeden,
Lewis Hine, Robert Capa, William Gedney, Ruth Orkin, Walker
Evans, James VanDerZee, Mark Shaw, Thomas Eakins, Edweard
Muybridge, Lee Friedlander, Edward Steichen, and many
others. His shows for James Bidgood and Annemarie Heinrich
were the first U. S. solo exhibitions for both these internationally
known artists. In addition he has produced shows of war photography,
19th century painted tintypes, early circus photography, Camera Work
photogravures, daguerreotypes, and vernacular images.
Collins has been
a dealer in antiques and art for over two decades and has exhibited in major shows in
New York City and throughout New England. His curated exhibitions of
fine objects have included Victorian majolica, sculpture by
Madelaine Park, and vintage Beat memorabilia. He has been a
subject in articles on photography and collecting in Martha Stewart
Living, Shutterbug, Antiques and the Arts Weekly, and Provincetown
Arts. He has published essays on painting and photography for
Provincetown Arts and has illustrated books, collaborating with
Allen Ginsberg, Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Eileen Myles.
Larry
Collins holds an MFA degree in painting from
the Massachusetts College of Art, has been a professor of art at
the University of New Hampshire, Massachusetts College of Art, and Montserrat College of
Art. He is a painter and photographer whose work
has been exhibited internationally. His paintings and drawings
are in the permanent collections of the Sheldon Memorial Art
Gallery, the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, the Boston
Public Library, and other institutions. He was an infantryman and a combat artist
in Vietnam and his war photographs are in the permanent collections of the
Worcester Art Museum and the New York Public Library.
Larry
Collins will be honored with a retrospective exhibition of his work at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum in 2010.
